Marcos’s family is extremely poor, with ten people living in a one-room house that has a small kitchen but lacks electricity, a septic tank, and running water. Marcos’s father does not have a steady job, so he works occasionally in agriculture or as a fruit picker. Although Marcos is a shy little boy, he is eager to learn to read and write. His parents, who did not finish school, want a better future for him.
